The priest and the politician (a story about time management and being late)

After twenty-five years in the same parish, Father O'Shaunessey was saying his farewells at his retirement dinner. An eminent member of the congregation - a leading politician - had been asked to make a presentation and a short speech, but was late arriving. So the priest took it upon himself to fill the time, and stood up to the microphone: "I remember the first confession I heard here twenty-five years ago and it worried me as to what sort of place I'd come to... That first confession remains the worst I've ever heard. The chap confessed that he'd stolen a TV set from a neighbour and lied to the police when questioned, successfully blaming it on a local scallywag. He said that he'd stolen money from his parents and from his employer; that he'd had affairs with several of his friends' wives; that he'd taken hard drugs, and had slept with his sister and given her VD. You can imagine what I thought... However I'm pl...

After ten years of apprenticeship, Tenno achieved the rank of Zen teacher. One rainy day, he went to visit the famous master Nan-in. When he walked in, the master greeted him with a question, "Did you leave your wooden clogs and umbrella on the porch?" "Yes," Tenno replied. "Tell me," the master continued, "did you place your umbrella to the left of your shoes, or to the right?" Tenno did not know the answer, and realized that he had not yet attained full awareness. So he became Nan-in's apprentice and studied under him for ten more years. Source: Zen Stories Blog

Be open to new ideas and information

Remain open to new ideas and information. Nobody knows it all and thinking that you do is dumb; it can slam the door on great discoveries and opportunities. If I had started in business thinking that I knew everything, I'd have been finished before I began. Don't make that mistake. Every business has surprises, hidden dangers beneath the surface, and simple problems that become complex. In my life, I want each day to be full of discoveries, and I frequently wonder what I'll be learning each day. It's a terrific way to start the day. When I learn, it makes me feel great, alive, and excited - it makes me want to learn more. As a result, I'm never bored, which I think is a big reason for my success. Never think of learning as a burden or a chore. It may require some discipline, but it can be a stimulating and exciting adventure. An extract from Donald Trump's blog.

RULE 49-O is a Rule in the The Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961 , which governs elections in India . It covers the procedures to be followed when a valid voter decides not to cast his vote , and decides to record this fact. Recording one's vote under Rule 49-O is a choice that voters can exercise to prevent electoral fraud , and misuse of their vote. " If an elector, after his electoral roll number has been duly entered in the register of voters in Form-17A and has put his signature or thumb impression thereon as required under sub-rule (1) of rule 49L, decided not to record his vote, a remark to this effect shall be made against the said entry in Form 17A by the presiding officer and the signature or thumb impression of the elector shall be obtained against such remark. " Why should you go to polling booth and use 49-O? Convey that your name in the electoral roll has been used (so that no one will misuse it) Convey that none of the candidates appeared fit to vot...

Google's advice to Students

How do we find these non-routine savants? There are many factors, of course, but we primarily look for ... ... analytical reasoning . Google is a data-driven, analytic company. When an issue arises or a decision needs to be made, we start with data. That means we can talk about what we know, instead of what we think we know. ... communication skills . Marshalling and understanding the available evidence isn't useful unless you can effectively communicate your conclusions. ... a willingness to experiment . Non-routine problems call for non-routine solutions and there is no formula for success. A well-designed experiment calls for a range of treatments, explicit control groups, and careful post-treatment analysis. Sometimes an experiment kills off a pet theory, so you need a willingness to accept the evidence even if you don't like it. ... team players . Virtually every project at Google is run by a small team. People need to work well together and perform up to the team's e...
